We never expected to be in the retail tile business. Pat, a world-renowned sculptor, started making handmade tiles in 1994 in East Hampton, New York, where she and Art, an author and essayist, worked and lived. The tiles won awards and were soon represented in more than 140 showrooms nationally — including Country Floors, Artistic Tile and Westport Tile & Stone. The business grew. Our need for more space, and the exorbitant cost of doing business in the Hamptons, were a mismatch. Goodbye East Hampton We moved to Catskill in 1998 and rented 2,000 square feet of space on Main Street. A year later, we started thinking about creating a tile showroom. We knew dozens of handmade tile makers personally, from our annual exhibit at the International Tile & Stone exposition. We had visited, and given talks at, more than 50 showrooms that represented our line nationally. |
